A Climb Up the Hill

(Jim Loftus)
October 15, 2002
There are just so many things I love about this song--the inspiration came from seeing a dear friend's girlfriend jump up around his shoulders and ride him piggyback at closing time in a bar--they were so in love and it was such a joyful moment that it stuck like a snapshot in my brain and formed the basis for this song--("She grabs my shoulders, she rides me piggyback into the shower")...I wanted to capture that crazy morning-after bliss of two lovers, and the numerous "Jack & Jill" nursery rhyme references played so well with building the song's focus...also love the rhyme schemes(dresser/caress her..."wrestle" also fits snugly in that line)...also the slight changes in the choruses were a fun discovery("something good as this will GET OUT--something good as this will GIVE OUT")...I enjoyed performing this on guitar at an open-mike at the great songwriter venue THE POINT in Bryn Mawr as I feel it is one of my best direct songs--and it was well received.
A Climb Up the Hill

She wears my T-shirt
She makes me so happy I just can't stand it
She pours the coffee
She makes a mess on the sheets like she planned it
We laugh 'til tears flow
If this is Heaven then I want a refill
Where did the cap go?
Bottle this up coz I don't want it to spill--
And it will--
Something good as this will get out
What a thrill--my Jill
Everyday's a climb up the hill

She throws my pillow
I duck and it hits the lamp on the dresser
We start to wrestle
She finally stops when I start to caress her
She grabs my shoulders
She rides me piggyback into the shower
My arms enfold her
I won't let go 'til we're over the hill--
And we will--
Something good as this will give out
What a thrill--my Jill
Everyday's a climb up the hill

Bridge:
If it's a dream then please don't wake me up
Won't somebody come and fill my cup?
Fetch the pail and let me be the suppliant pup

Dress her up or down
Either way she still paints the town
What a thrill--my Jill
Everyday's a climb up the hill
If I fall down--break my crown
She will still come tumbling down
What a thrill--my Jill
Everyday's a climb up the hill
